Wassie, Toyba and their children, Fatouma and Mohamed, arrived in Italy at the end of the year. They were slowly starting to get the hang of living in their new world, thanks to the volunteers' constant support, the school and their Italian classes.
They, more than others, found the COVID-19 emergency especially jarring.
A couple of weeks ago, Giacomo, a Caritas worker, held a virtual meeting with the group. To make his point and plan for the future, Giacomo asked the volunteers, "How do you picture the family now and in the near future?"
This short video shows their answers, which say a lot about the relationship developed in only a few months.
Just a few days after this meeting, the volunteers found out that Wassie and Toyba were celebrating their wedding anniversary. That's why they decided to organize a mini surprise party for them. Although it was celebrated outside the family's home, there was plenty of cake... and lots of face masks.
